RT at my desk Princess Anne's entourage

RT at my desk

My ex-boyfriend working at my desk at 471a Finchley road. On the wall above the desk are a painting of a tellytubby by David Bradbury, assorted postcards from exhibitions I’d been to, a photo of an old cinema in Kilburn, and an article about a missing girl from a 1915 film fan magazine. The girl had run away to be an actress. I bought the desk from a second hand furniture shop in Kilburn High Road, the bookcase was made for me by my Dad, painted to match my purple and green bedroom.

building site Islamic Centre of England

Somewhere between West Hampstead and Kilburn

This remaining facade of a terraced house amazed me. I couldn’t believe anyone would go to so much trouble to virtually remodel a small house like this. I was also struck by the way the front of a house like this, is a bit like a face, and with nothing behind it there is something deeply unsettling and vulnerable about the space. I’m still interested in empty houses and derelict domestic buildings.

Zachary Crush playing chess Maggie Robb University of Kent

Playing chess with Zach

This is Zachary Crush. In the picture we’re in his flat in South London playing chess. I went to school with Zach and while I was at university we ‘went out’ together during the holidays. By the time this photo happened we were ‘just good friends’ and got together quite regularly as he lived in London. Zachary loved football and drinking, music and his houseplants. He persuaded me that green was a peaceful colour to paint your home, and he was right. He died in 2002, just a few weeks after his 33rd birthday. He fell off the back of a bus. It sounds stupid saying it like that, simple and awful. He was on his way home after a night out drinking and watching England play football. He was taking the bus home, one of those Routemasters that people like to wax lyrical about, and he fell off near his home. Nobody knows for sure what really happened. I like this picture of him, especially the slippers.

No, I haven't taken my test yet.

VR on the telephone Maggie Robb University of Kent

VR on the telephone

VR had the big downstairs room in the flat which she painted white. With PH’s help I think she also ripped out the carpet, smoothed down the floorboards and painted them black. She had a great eye for style and colour and was studying furniture design at college while I lived with her. She was particularly partial to 60s and 70s fashion.

Chairs at the Design Museum

I used to like going to the Design Museum a lot. I particularly liked that part of the Thames where it is situated, and often me and RT would walk from here to Greenwich, probably stopping in at the Design Museum for the café and the shop and a quick wizz round upstairs.

Hungover in Regent’s Park Romy Crabb, Brighton

Hungover in Regent’s Park

Well I suppose after the dinner party, comes the hangover. The Telecom Tower had always been a fascinating totem pole of London. I recently heard Rich Hall describe it the best in a short story called Impact as looking like an old table leg covered in bottle tops.

To hear this story read by Rich here. It made me cry with laughter.

Dinner Party in Wandsworth

Present in this picture are Toby, RT, Ilja Gregory and the Pettigrews, Nick Pettigrew is smiling at the camera. We were at Toby and Ilja’s flat. They got married about two years later. I think we were on the ice-pop course when I took this picture.
