Embassy Siege, Notting Hill Maggie Robb, Helen Womersley

Embassy Siege, Notting Hill

This picture show protestors outside the Greek Embassy angry about the arrest of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. During the siege the demonstrators took a Greek clerk hostage, but he was released unharmed after three days. I was working just the corner at a company called Rapido and took the photograph in my lunch hour.

For more background about the siege go here.

Legs, 471a Finchley Rd

These are my legs, I think I was a bit drunk when I took this picture. I was definitely trying to be ‘creative’.

Roof, 471a Finchley Road Girl Texting in the Paperchase cafe, Tottenham Court Road

Roof, 471a Finchley Road

One of the best things about living in the flat on Finchley Road was the roof terrace. Except when other residents decided they would go out up there and run from one roof top to the next, usually in the middle of the night or the very early morning fuelled by drink. We had two levels to our roof access. The lower part had French doors that opened out from the upstairs landing and was an oasis of flowers and plants when PH was in charge. The top level, accessed by a metal staircase, gave a great view across London, and a long unprotected drop to the road below.

Fiona McPhillips’ birthday Curly under the newspaper

Fiona McPhillips’ birthday, West London

Fiona is the second on the right. She was the ex-girlfriend of an old college mate of mine and she and I just hit it off as soon as we met. Later on in 1999 we went on holiday to America together, though when this photo was taken we had no idea we’d be doing that. I’ve lost touch with Fi in the last couple of years which I’m sad about, this photo reminds me that she was always great fun, and a very loyal and generous friend.

Valentine’s Day, Hampstead David Robb

Valentine’s Day, Hampstead

Louis bakery and teashop is one of the best places for cake I know. Thank God that the branches in Swiss Cottage and Hampstead are both still there. It’s always a tough choice picking what to have, but I particularly recommend the cheesecake.

Paula’s flat in Manchester Snowdrops, West Hampstead

Paula’s flat in Manchester

I set the timer to take this picture, hence the dreadful framing and stupid facial expression. Paula lived in Manchester where she had gone to study a PHD in history. She nows lives in Altrincham with her husband and two children.

Snowdrops in the back garden, West Hampstead

These little fellows have had to live up to their name recently having been buried in snow for most of last week. Good to see them out and about.

Nails painted in Manchester Postman's Trolly, West Hampstead

Nails painted in Manchester

This is me getting my nails done in a beauty parlour in Manchester. I’d gone there to visit my friend Paula Simpson.

Postman's Trolly, West Hampstead

There is still something a little bit thrilling about the expectation of real, hard copy post. This postman's cart gives me a little frisson of excitement, even though it probably contains nothing much more than bills, junk mail and that annoying magazine from Sky. Still, you never know...
