Kitchen 471a Finchley Rd

There was usually at least one cat hanging out in the kitchen. It was where they got fed, but also it was a lovely sunny room in the daytime and nice and cosy in the evenings. This cat is Dandelion, the adventurous uncle.

Man carrying cross, Kensington High Street

I used to see this eccentric individual quite a bit while I was working in the Notting Hill area. He carried this cross around the streets I guess in honour of Jesus. Of course, now that I think about it, he was probably more active around this time of year what with it being Lent. He was a bit too unnerving to photograph from the front.

London Underground cap, Bond Street Dexter Walter Robb, Lady Janet Womersley, Sir Peter Womersley, UCLH

London Underground cap, found at Bond Street

I remember seeing this cap on the bench and getting a bit of thrill of excitement. It was a rather lovely piece of uniform, and I thought that it wouldn’t be long before somebody swiped it and took it home to play with. I was too timid to do this myself, even though I badly wanted to.

Churchyard, Hampstead David Robb, Dexter Robb, Kangaroo Care, UCLH

Churchyard, Hampstead

This is the graveyard at St Johns at Hampstead Church. It is one of the prettiest churches and graveyards in London. The church looks as though it should be on the lid of a tin of Quality Street, whereas the graveyard is a Goth’s delight of Victorian stones and sculptures. The painter John Constable is buried here, as the sign says. This picture was taken in the rain making the flagstones glassy and the trees smell green.

Privy Garden, Hampton Court Dexter Robb, Rexer, UCLH

Evening class outing to the Privy Garden, Hampton Court

This was a freezing cold day I remember vividly because I did not wear a coat, and we had a long day being slowly guided around the gardens. Why didn’t I wear a coat? It had seemed quite spring-like when I left the house…. The group of backs in the foreground of the picture are the rest of my class. You will notice how they are all wearing big, thick, Winter coats.

Debbie Young, Paul Cziok: Film Researchers – “Unzipped”

We were a team of three to begin with on “Unzipped”: three of us to research clips for six one hour programmes. We had tiny budgets which dwindled as the production went on, and it was hard work clearing the material for the kind of use the producers needed. At the time it seemed like the worst job I’d ever had; long hours, unrealistic expectations and producers having nervous break-downs all over the shop. Looking back over ten years my feelings about it have softened – it was also good fun, a real challenge, and a chance to bond with some great people- after all, we were all in it together.
