Beak Street, Soho Multitasking

Beak Street, Soho

Another bustling Soho scene. I love the narrow streets and the way the sunlight cuts the road in half.

Soho, Behind Carnaby Street

Another great shop front, with show-off motorbike paraded on the street outside.

Shop, Soho Soft car, from Grandpa

Shop, Soho

The shops around Soho are constantly changing and evolving, redecorating themselves and trying to attract attention away from the bigger chain stores. This is one of my favourite parts of London because I’ve worked there on and off ever since my first job in telly back in the early 1990s.

Bank Holiday, Soho

I walked into work on the bank holiday Monday after Easter and London was deserted, at least until the shops on Oxford street opened at about 10 O’clock, and even then the streets around Soho were dead quiet. Outside this ad agency someone had found a place to sleep, and someone else had dumped a load of Imac packing cases. 1999 was the year of the Imac. We fell in love with their funky, anti-grey appearance, and the fact that they didn’t have all that ugly hard-drive boxiness. We all got Imacs at Rapido, and a year later I bought one for myself, it was blue, very expensive and I loved it.

Easter Sunday, Highgate Garden wall adorned, West Hampstead, NW6

Easter Sunday, Highgate

London sometimes seems to fall asleep on the big public holidays, like Easter, Christmas and New Year’s Day. Places feel deflated without the bustle of ‘normal’ work days and the rush of chores and leisure at the weekends. Londoners seem to hole up indoors and the streets can sometimes feel a bit dead, like here in Highgate on Easter Day.

Demonstration, Trafalgar Square

This was a demonstration protesting against the attacks between Yugoslav police forces, Yugoslav paramilitaries, and the Kosovar Albanian paramilitaries that happened between March and June of 1999.

Good Friday, Belsize Park Ariadne Yates, Cake

Good Friday, Belsize Park

This was Good Friday and I had been into work in the morning and then RT met me in the afternoon and we walked home through Camden and Hampstead. We used to like long walks around the capital. It felt good being out in the Spring weather and having a whole two days off work.

The cake...

...that Ariadne brought round today when she came for a visit and made me lunch.
