Liberty’s shop window Apple blossom, West Hampstead

Liberty’s shop window

I think the mobile in this display is a lot more stylish and interesting that the clothes it is supposed to be promoting.

PH, Swiss Cottage

This is P and her great car. The car was so old you didn’t have to wear a seatbelt when you traveled in it, which was a strange and liberating feeling. It was also a great way of spotting P out and about in our area. I think she’d given me a lift down to the swimming pool.

Holly, runner and Damian editor, Berwick Street Soho

This was one of those rare occasions when I went for a drink after work with my colleagues. Though I have a feeling it became a lot more common in the months and years after this picture was taken. Damian was from Manchester, and was editing Politics Unzipped at Rapido. Holly was a great runner who worked really hard and was really bright and good fun. We were the last three left in the bar that night.

RT, Museum of London

What could make a better picture than a Punch and Judy show? I seem to remember that RT’s grumpy expression was only half ironic, but I can’t remember why now. We both enjoyed going to museums and doing stuff at the weekends, so it can’t have been that.

Ilja and Toby’s shoes Dexter Robb, Cordelia Feldman, Number 16 bus

Ilja and Toby’s shoes

You’ve met this couple earlier on in the year, I guess we had gone back again for another dinner party. I remember being impressed with how organised Toby’s flat was, even though it was really small. This shoe rack hung on the back of the door into the living room. The shiny black shoes with the shoe horses in them would have been what Toby wore for his job in the city, the All Star trainers higher up would have been his more normal footwear. Ilja’s shoes are more battered and worn. She was pretty frugal when it came to buying new things back then.

Argyle Street, London Tulips, Shoot Up Hill

Argyle Street, London

The crowds waiting to go into the show always milled around outside the front door of this theatre, and still do today, though I think The Sound of Music is on there now. It’s always been a bit of a bottle neck of people standing around colliding with people speeding to and fro.
