PH and Daisy A nice picture of PH and Daisy. Daisy was the grand dame of the cat family who lived at 471a Finchley Road. She had an elaborate imaginary back-story, which among other things involved her being descended from the murdered Russian royal family, and hoarding trunks of furs and jewels in the attic. Sometimes it was hard to remember she was probably only a cat. |

Carnaby Street, after work This sign has always given me a bit of a buzz. My very first job was working on Carnaby Street in a tiny office above a shop. I was a film researcher and my job was to find clips of footage and photos for the This Morning show. At the time I thought it was my dream job. The pay was terrible and I had to commute from Sussex because I couldn’t afford to live in London, but it was great, and the people I worked with were good fun too. Since then I’ve often worked around the street, the doorway to my office has been blocked off and the shop must have changed hands a dozen times. |

Soho Square, after the bomb in Old Compton Street I was having an after work drink in a pub around the corner from the Admiral Duncan pub when the nail bomb went off. I remember how all of a sudden everyone’s mobile phones started to ring. I didn’t hear the blast, it must have been soaked up by the walls of the buildings and narrow streets in that area. Living in London is sometimes associated in some peoples’ minds with bombings - until the bombings of 7/7 this was the closest I’d come to one. For more info go here. |

Battersea Park, Bank Holiday I remember liking the frenetic movement and colour in this picture as the kids rushed around furiously behind the railings of the playground area. I also liked the pair of grown-up legs in white trousers swinging up into the air behind the woman pushing the little girl in the pink frock. Most of the kids will be in their late teens by now. |

Lancing College and the River Adur One of my favourite views. Lancing College is a local landmark in Shoreham. Its one of the first things I see when I’m driving from Shoreham station to Steyning. It was founded in 1848 by Nathaniel Woodard. Apparently it now costs an average of £26,000 a year to send a child there. Hard to believe. Famous alumni include Evelyn Waugh, Sir Tim Rice, Tom Driberg and Jamie Theakston. |

John, Julia, Matthew, Kathy, Steyning I don’t know why John is laughing, but something must have amused him. Matthew and Kathy are leaning over their flop-eared rabbit in the pen. I’m not sure if it was this bunny, but one of Kathy’s rabbits came to a bad end in this garden when a local fox came by for a quick takeaway. |

Bedroom, Finchley Road It’s hard to believe I ever managed to get any peace in such a technicolour bedroom. I really liked those three quarter length trousers laid out on the bed, I was probably looking forward to putting them on as I took this picture. On the rail are a mixture of mine and RT’s clothes. On the shelves behind the bed are a picture of a cat with an arched back painted by Helen Womersley, and a yellow papier-mâché balloon dog made by David Bradbury. |
