Toilet, McDonalds, Strand
It can’t be a good sign that this was my picture of the day back on a May evening in 1999. Something tells me this picture was probably taken quite late at night. No doubt a pub was involved.

Installation on bank of The Thames, Oxo Wharf
It seems strange to think of the Thames having a ‘beach’ especially where it runs through the centre of London, but that is what this stretch of mud visible at low tide is referred to as sometimes. It seemed daring to me at the time that someone had dared to stick things into the mud like this, and that others had dared to go right down to the ‘beach’ and have a look at it up close. This was before the Tate Modern was opened and this little stretch of the South Bank was less well trodden.

Journalists outside Rapido, waiting for Sam
Where, just 48 hours earlier, the Unzipped team had been filming kebabs in the gutter (see below) now reporters and photographers gathered to try and catch a glimpse of one of my colleagues, Sam Farmer. He was the runner at Rapido and a lovely, good-looking bloke with a great sense of humour. I wasn’t the only girl to think so as the actress Caroline Quentin had just dumped her husband Paul Merton in order to move in with him. The story broke when she became pregnant and the press rolled up, fascinated by the love triangle and the fact that Sam was a whole lot younger than Caroline.

Battersea Power Station from Victoria Embankment
To get rid of the tension of working at Rapido 5 and sometimes 6 days a week, I used to go for long walks around London on my days off. This was taken from the Victoria Embankment on one such walk.

Filming a Kebab outside Rapido
This was no doubt a spot of actuality filming to cover a link on the Unzipped series. One of the show’s targets – something tells me it may have been Gazza – had an unhealthy relationship with kebabs and the production team for his show, ‘Football Unzipped’ was filming a kebab lying in the gutter to illustrate the point. I took the photo from the window by my desk looking down at them. It was a Saturday, so I must have been doing yet more overtime.

One of the horrible, plastic drinking establishments at the O2 centre on Finchley Road. They still exist today.
