Hungover at Golden Gate Bridge Curly hunting insects, West Hampstead

Hungover at Golden Gate Bridge

One of the worst hangovers of my life. We’d stayed up late the night before drinking in the bar next to the hotel and I’d had a devil in me. We’d already arranged to go to the Golden Gate Bridge the next day by bus, and we had a horrible journey tying to get there, as we’d left very early in the morning and all the buses seemed to be full of school children. At first I didn’t let on to Fiona how wretched I was feeling, but on the bus going home I confessed how shit I was feeling and she also admitted that she’d had better days – we went back to the San Remo and laughed an laughed about the night before which was brilliant. As you can see from this picture, we didn’t pick the best of days to of and see the bridge.

Smashed bottles, San Francisco

We heard this guy before we saw him, swearing at the top of his voice because he’d just lost some of his load in the road. The entire shopping trolley and the plastic bags attacked to its sides were filled with bottles. I don’t know what he was going to to do with them.

Now this was a lovely hotel! The San Remo in San Francisco. We loved it here. Right down near the docks, and purportedly converted from an old doss house for sailors. This place had loads of charm, lots of quaint detail and felt homely and unusual at the same time. I remember making calls from the cute little phone booth in the lobby, and it had a great bar attached at the side. I wish we’d spent all our SF stay here.

New York Streets

The buildings are amazing, the way they cast whole streets into shadow like great big cliffs. I know we have big buildings and tower blocks in London too, but somehow they seemed more romantic in New York.

The Statue of Liberty, New York

One of my favourite things that we did in NYC was ride the ferry to and fro across the bay. A great cheap way to get some amazing views of the city’s waterfront, and of course the Statue of Liberty looked amazing at sunset.

Hotel 17, New York Dexter Robb, West Hampstead

Hotel 17, New York

This is Fiona Philips outside the bohemian, but a little threadbare Hotel 17 on East Seventeen Street, the starting point for our four days in New York. I think when Fiona saw our room she was a bit disappointed to say the least, and I was as well at first. I’d sold it to Fi as being dirt cheap – which it was, and also the set of Woody Allen’s Manhattan Murder Mystery, and as she was a Woody Allen fan than cinched it. Our room was very basic - two hard little single beds with drab covers, and a single basin against a wall next to a window. I think there may have been a chest of drawers and a couple of chairs but that was it furniture-wise. The bathrooms and toilets were down the hall, and actually they were great, and I remember the corridors as being very dark brown and woody, and just like something out of a film. By the time we’d been there 24 hours we loved it, especially being called ‘Babe’ by the reception guy who was way too cool for school.
