Rebecca, Will, Me and Fiona –last supper in San Francisco Dexter, staying cool in his ‘cool’ t-shirt

Rebecca, Will, Me and Fiona –last supper in San Francisco

Will was an old friend of mine who I met while studying for an MA in Film at the BFI. He and his girlfriend were on holiday in SF at the same time as me and Fiona and we had dinner with them the night before we left. He and his girlfriend split up not long after they got back.

The Streets of San Francisco West Hampstead station, on the hottest day of the year so far

The Streets of San Francisco

It was scenes like this one glimpsed in films and old TV shows that made me want to go to San Francisco for years and years before I finally got there. The city lived up to all my expectations and I could quite have moved there for good – still could in many ways.

Alcatraz Prison, San Francisco camoflage caravan

Alcatraz Prison, San Francisco

Like the wine tour and the Golden Gate Bridge, the trip out to Alcatraz was definitely a visit not to be missed. Unfortunately I rather spoiled our day by letting myself get separated from Fiona during a walk round another island, and almost leaving her behind when the last ferry was due to sail back to the mainland. Fi had hurt her foot during a walk round the island and I hadn’t realised and she was going at a much slower pace than I realised. Luckily an island warden had spotted her on the road, picked her up and brought her back . I felt terrible – I was already trying to persuade the boat people that we couldn’t leave without her. Sorry Fiona.

Japanese tea garden, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco Horse and rider crossing the M25

Japanese tea garden, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco

This was fun: drinking tea and eating cookies in a little picket-fenced café, and wandering around these amazing gardens. There was a strange kind of bridge that was like half a wheel embedded into the ground.

Vineyard, San Francisco Amberley Pottery, West Sussex

Vineyard, San Francisco

Of course it wouldn’t be a proper trip to this part of the world without a tour of the Nappa Valley, and that’s exactly what Fi and I did, by coach. It was a lot hotter away from the misty, blowsy coast, but luckily there was plenty of wine to be found en route to quench our thirsts. Funny to see this again as this week Dave and I have been talking about owning a vineyard...

Cousins, Oakland, California Peter carries two chickens, Steyning

Cousins, Oakland, California

This is my cousin Catherine, a few years older than me and Mum to these three gorgeous boys. She and her partner Hew had moved to Oakland for a job Hew had taken and the boys were spending two years out there in an American school. Fi and I went out to visit them for a day which was lovely. I haven’t seen the boys since then, but hope to later this year in September.
