Flowers on roof, 471a Finchley Road

PH has to take all the credit for this lovely display. To water the pot she used to run the hosepipe through the kitchen window below, and up over the railings. Yes, those are tomato plants in the foreground.

Spooky House, Hampstead Back by popular demand – Dexter holds Red Ted (stolen from his last visit to Steyning)

Spooky House, Hampstead

Here’s that house again (last seen in a 2009 picture – here) As you can see, it’s deteriorated quite badly over the last 10 years. I think it must have have been built for an artist originally as that big window must have let loads of light into the one big room the house seems to be centred around. I’m not sure it was even inhabited back in ‘99.

Camden Town Tube Station Bathtime, West Hampstead

Camden Town Tube Station

Any teenager who has ever come to London to taste its atmosphere and its cool knows this spot. Camden is a mecca for kids as much today as it ever was. If this picture had been taken in the evening or at a weekend these railings would have been lined with people waiting for their mates to turn up. I still love Camden – I guess I’ve grown out of the Camden fashions but I still love the shops and the people. During this week in July 1999 I was working for a TV production company just around the corner from here, making a documentary about Oliver Reed.

RT, PH’s roof garden The member’s room at The Wellcome Trust

RT, PH’s roof garden

A balmy sunny evening up on the roof. PH made our bit of outside space into a gorgeous place to hang out, planting geraniums in the old chimney stacks. When I finally moved out my parents were very keen to remove the chimney pots as they made such great containers for plants.

The member’s room at The Wellcome Trust

A peaceful haven.

Boarding the plane, San Francisco A Curly-eye view of the garden, West Hampstead

Boarding the plane, San Francisco

I guess we made a mistake ending our American Odyssey the day before their biggest national holiday but here we were, heading back to the UK on July 3rd. I’d had a brilliant trip and fulfilled a major ambition.

The Painted Ladies, San Francisco Keeping the heat out, West Hampstead

The Painted Ladies, San Francisco

Probably one of the most beautiful row of houses in San Francisco, and certainly one of the most photographed. I made a special trip out there to snap this before we left for the airport. They are fairytale perfect.
