Back room of pub Dexter browses through his medical records and keeps an ear open for The Weakest Link

Back room of pub

Watchmaker was based at Latimer Road, walking distance from Portobello, so often at lunchtimes I would walk down that way to the shops and market. Occasionally I went and had lunch with one of my colleagues which is what I was doing when this picture was taken. I remember we were the only place in the whole establishment having lunch that day.

Andy Rowe, eclipse watching

I’m sure you’ll all remember the total eclipse of the sun back in 1999. If it wasn’t enough that it was the last year of the Millennium, we also had to contend with other superstitious doomy portents like watching our sun disappear behind the moon. Actually it was all a bit of a non-event in London as inevitably it was a cloudy day. Every one at Watchmaker used it as a good excuse to take a few hours off work, gather on the roof of the Chrysalis building, and gurn at the sky through the hole in a CD – what was that all about?

School girls, Centre Point Ice cream van, car park at the O2 Centre, Finchley Road

School girls, Centre Point

This is one of the pictures that made my photo-of-the-day project feel worthwhile. Capturing a moment like this was such a buzz. These girls must have been on some kind of trip to London and had been told by their teacher to rendez vous at Centre Point. Considering its August and therefore the school holidays it seems strange to see them like this all in uniform but I remember very clearly that they were English. The lorry going past is tooting at them and obviously the girls are responding in kind. I like looking along the lines of faces and shapes and picking out the popular one, the naughty one, the shy one, the too tall one, the titchy one, the mature one, the plump one….. wonder where they are now.

RT, TV Dinner A sunny day in Cricklewood

RT, TV Dinner

One of the nice things about living with someone is having good dinners together, though judging by his pose, R must have been glued to something particularly interesting on the TV. I see a trusty copy of The Guardian lurking under the plate to staunch the heat.

Floating pub, river Thames Damson jam, West Hampstead

Floating pub, river Thames

Snapped this guy taking photos of this girl on the deck of the floating pub. Who were they? Boyfriend and girlfriend? Model and photographer?

Damson jam, West Hampstead

It’s been a bumper damson crop this year. Dave’s been up all hours making jam. 40 jars so far.... Who wants one?

V.R’s House-warming Party Caspar recreates the real ‘Life of Pi’

V.R’s House-warming Party

My ex-flatmate had found a great house-share in Islington after leaving Finchley road. I was very envious of her garden. Here she is in a trademark sixties-style outfit.

Rosita, Portobello Road Mummies on Parade, the little park, Mapesbury

Rosita, Portobello Road

Rosita were a band made up of two boys and two girls and this is the van dropping off their equipment at Rough Trade’s tiny, stinky record shop where they were playing a secret gig one sticky August night. I’d never met any of them before this night, but they all went on to become very good friends, and three of them came to my wedding last year. Sadly the band split up after a couple of years as bands do. Emma and Marie had previously been in a well known band called Kenicke, and have carried on performing music in various incarnations as well as having successful careers in academia and the arts respectively. Matt went on to work with Coldplay, and Paddy the drummer was in The Boyfriends. He’s now training to be a teacher. This was a very special night for me, the beginning of lots of adventures!
