Janet, before she went to Amsterdam
Janet worked at the BBC and I can’t remember meeting her but we hit it off immediately, I do remember that. She was from Australia but had lived in the UK for a while. In this picture we’re having a drink together in a bar in Portobello to say goodbye before she went off to live with her boyfriend in Amsterdam. A few years later we bumped into each other on a beach in Turkey. I’ve not idea where she is now as we’ve lost touch.

My bedroom, Finchley Road
Not much to say about his – there ‘s the usual mess of magazines and bits and bobs on my table, and the dear old cream telephone on the bookcase. Voices always sounded as though they were trapped in a tin can through that. I bought a copy of Vogue the other day – but I haven’t had a chance to look at it yet. I love September for new clothes, new styles, a feeling of excitement and creativity and fresh endevours in the air.

Alleyway, 471 Finchley Road
The back alley looking suitably gothic and creepy. These days it just looks a mess when I walk past.

After hours, off-lining at Watchmaker
Here’s that windowless room again. Don’t be fooled – that piece of glass to the right edge of the picture is a window into anther windowless room. This was my archive clip domain. That machine you can see was where I compiled tapes made up of funny clips that Andrew Collins and Stewart Maconie, the writers built their scripts around. The programme we were all busy working on was Clive James’ Night of 1,000 stars – a potted history of the Millennium that was to go out on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the auspicious change of millennium.

Lady in red coat, Primrose Hill
I thought this lady looked very smart and of course the bright red coat against a sombre monochrome background is very reminiscent of ‘Don’t Look Now’, ‘Schindler’s List’ and other cultural references.

Me holding Orla Pettigrew
It’s only now that I’ve had my own baby this year and been around a lot of other young children, that I realise what a smashing head of hair Orla had! She could only have been a few weeks old here – you probably saw the picture of her as a bump back in July’s photos of the day, and before that as jus the suggestion of a bump on her Mum and Dad’s wedding day in Brighton, back in March.

Steps next to the ICA
A huge drift of Autumn leaves spread across the bottom steps. I ‘ve had many a good night out at the ICA over the last ten years and more. Haven’t been back there for a while now though. RT introduced me to its members bar which was always a great place to hang out, and a few years after this picture was taken I was there again for a 25th anniversary of punk, because it was at the ICA that the Sex Pistols played one of their seminal gigs. The place was full of ageing punks and I met a couple of guys at the bar who I went on to work with at a website called Playlouder.com Those were interesting times. Still, the thing about the ICA that I liked especially was the fact hat a place of artistic revolution and experiment should be housed in such a classical, albeit beautiful, building.
