Andy and Rachael look at pictures of Barbra Dexter sitting up to play with his toys

Andy and Rachael look at pictures of Barbra

This is a beautifully posed picture! And of course the pics they’re looking at are of the greatest divan who ever walked the earth – Barbra Streisand. Andy Rowe was suddenly thrown into the deep end when Streisand’s ‘people’ suddenly got back in touch with Watchmaker to say that Barbra would do an interview with Clive James for a TV special. Andy and Clive both had to jump through numerous hoops I believe in order to meet the terms of her side of the deal, but hey, that’s showbiz!

Tower, Latimer Road Helen and Dexter on the train up to London

Tower, Latimer Road

Another iconic London image – a grim tower block seen through a mesh fence with a beautiful blue sky behind. I always liked the clean sharp lines of blocks like this, but I wouldn’t want to live in one.

Oxford Street, W1

Oxford Street, W1

The No. 73 bus – probably the most famous bus route in London for some reason. and here is one of the old route masters that you don’t get anymore. This lady in the short pink skirt with all her packages was about to demonstrate the danger of mounting a moving route master – even in slow traffic. I vividly remember taking this picture, wondering and worrying if she was going to make it in one piece– she did, and gracefully too.

I forgot!

Sam Archer, just moved in Dave and Dexter, picnic lunch under Chanctonbury Ring

Sam Archer, just moved in

What to say about Sam? We were not great flat mates – though I didn’t know that yet when this picture was taken. He was a nice bloke though, interested in architecture, cooking (especially chopping vegetables up very small with a very sharp knife) choir singing and all things French.

Karen Nicholls, Hampstead

I should say that Karen and the state of this van are not connected. It just seemed like something interesting to pose her next to.

Wall outside Boy George’s House, Hampstead Alicja takes Dexter for a walk, Willesden Green

Wall outside Boy George’s House, Hampstead

I’d heard about this wall once and wanted to see it for a while. I think I’d made a particular trip on this occasion. Boy George is one of those Brits whose fate has yo-yoed from high to low and back again ever since he arrived on the scene. I think in 1999 his career as a mega club DJ was on the rise and he was pretty cool again, it was definitely before the sad cases of false imprisonment charge, paranoia and dodgy, dark goings on. This wall bears witness to his ongoing and global popularity.

When I was at Primary School I used to put lots of little plaits in my hair after I’d washed it so that it would go frizzy and go to school with a huge mop of crinckly hair which somehow earned me the nickname Boy George. I wasn’t pleased at the time, don’t think I would be now either.

Market stall, Portobello Road Henrik and Anna make a donation to the Tate Modern

Market stall, Portobello Road

I ended up spending quite a bit of time in this little area of London during the Autumn on 1999. It was much nicer to walk from Latimer Road through Ladbroke Grove and up Portobello Road to the bus stop at Notting Hill, than to wait ages on the tube platform for a Hammersmith and City train. I liked it in the evenings best when the street was relatively quiet – especially up this end where the bricabrac market stall was.
