A familiar sight this year as well as ten years ago –sigh.

Clive James Production Office, Watchmaker TV Jessica and Dexter get ready for baby sign-language class

Clive James Production Office, Watchmaker TV

Here we are, the younger members of the production team. Helen Wurzer in the background by the white board, Matt the runner and all-round useful person just in the front of her, Richard Watcham, archive researcher and Rachael Clark, the celebrity booker, and the person with the toughest job on the whole show as far as I was concerned. I can’t remember the name of the girl in the checked shirt, I think she was the company runner, but I do remember she was very helpful. Funnily enough I was in a bookshop last weekend and I picked up Clive James’ latest instalment of memoirs in which he talks, fairly derogatively about the programme – though he’s more than generous about his co-workers which is something I suppose. Rachael and Matt are now married, to each other.

Portobello Road. W10 Washing

Portobello Road. W10

The last day of the penultimate month of the year and the Christmas trees are already appearing in the street market. Also in shot, one of the old routemaster buses that were phased out a few years ago.

Ben, runner at Watchmaker A lemon from my lemon tree

Ben, runner at Watchmaker

Ben was a great runner –always cheerful, always ready and able to help. Here he is making a cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks for an after hours drinks thing at work. As with all small production company kitchens there is a strange array of stuff on the shelves behind him. I’d love to know who the Slim Fast belonged to.

Ladies at the Barbican Carnaby Street Christmas Decs

Ladies at the Barbican

Another of my favourite pictures from the collection. I loved the contrast between the ladies on the bench and the poster above them which of course none of them are aware of. The Barbican is a calm and relaxing place around the galleries and these women added to that laid-back feel on this particular Sunday.

Tate Modern under Construction Emma Shepherd eating a Shepherd’s Pie, Willesden Green

Tate Modern under Construction

It was very exciting watching the progress of this important redevelopment in the run up to the Millennium. For a long long time it seemed as though it would never be finished, and that a power station of all places was going to be an odd place to view paintings in. The results however were a huge success and now the Tate Modern seems like a vital part of London’s cultural and architectural landscape. I go there a lot, though often I find myself more mesmerized by the view from the top floors than by some of the art on the walls, and there is something a little too close and claustrophobic about some of the gallery space – which is surprising considering the gargantuan size of the place. The turbine hall is always a refreshing place to be though, and I’ve seen some amazing exhibits there, and slid down a slide, and basked under the glow of a pretend sun.
