Christmas trees, Portobello Road Willesden Winter Wonderland

Christmas trees, Portobello Road

I love the smell of Christmas trees in the morning. One of the best things in the run up to Christmas, and always sends me right back to all the other Christmases of my life.

Wrap party, Notting Hill

All the Watchmaker gang from the Clive James Millennium Show. I wonder if TV productions still go for slap-up meals when they’ve finished a programme? Perhaps the recession and the scandals about expenses between them have put paid to that now.

Make-up bag Father Christmas travels by white van. B&Q car park, Cricklewood

Make-up bag

I loved this cute little bag – even though it was barely enough to fit a lipstick and a powder-compact and was probably more suited to an eight year old than a grown-up. I liked the way this photo came out blurry – probably because I was far too close to my subject when I pressed the shutter –obviously a bit of a slow day for photo opportunities.

Hampstead cemetery Bench, Queens’ Park

Hampstead cemetery

Don’t worry, I wasn’t actually hanging about graveyards at night ten years ago. This beautiful statue can be seen from the pavement of Church Row, and of course at this time of year it’s pretty much pitch dark by half past four...can’t remember exactly what I was doing there ten years ago today though...

Rock shop, Brighton John Womersley, Hemel Hempsted

Rock shop, Brighton

The rock shops in Brighton seem to be a lot more prolific in my memory of the place than they now are in reality. Or maybe they really have drifted out of business. There’s something very appealing about cramming the eye with a vision of all this rock, and of course a weekend in Brighton wouldn’t be complete without a stroll along the front where these shops used to be. I lived in Brighton for a year when I was 22 and it was one of the coldest winters I can ever remember – the wind used to roar off the sea like a hungry beast.

The merry widow, Brighton My study – nearly ready!

The merry widow, Brighton

I took Dave down to Brighton to meet some of my old school friends at a party that Bob Shaw was stoically throwing even though he’d split up rather painfully with his girlfriend not that long before. This woman was the ex-wife of the man that Bob’s girlfriend left him for. I don’t lik the caption I gave it at the time – that was rather mean. But she seemed so young to have been married in the first place that I guess I couldn’t imagine her as being a wife in the first place. It was good to be in Brighton with Dave for the night!

Lee and the ladies of Watchmaker Dexter and me, Willesden Green

Lee and the ladies of Watchmaker

This is Lee Evans and some of the female members of Watchmaker’s staff – I can see Helen Wurzer, Rachael Clarke, Emma Clark and Verity Newman here – striking a pose during an impromptu after hours Friday night work booze up in the office (there weren’t any nice pubs close to the Chrysalis Building). Lee was a very gentle and friendly person and not necessarily the louche ‘ladeez’ man this picture might imply – though then again, maybe he was. Watchmaker was once of the friendliest companies I ever worked for and there was a real sense of camaraderie among nearly all the people who worked there which has remained. Most of the people in this picture are still pretty good friends today I believe.
