Janet and Peter Womersley, opening Christmas cards. Dexter shows Grandma Robb his favourite toy

Janet and Peter Womersley, opening Christmas cards.

It was always one of the best Christmas rituals at my parents’ house – looking through all the Christmas cards that we’d been sent and deciding which were the best/most dreadful. When Dad was still working at Beechams he used to bring home all his work cards at lunchtime on Christmas Eve, and there were always some real shockers among that lot. To be honest, this particular Christmas was probably the worst one we ever celebrated as a family. Matthew had been told that the growth he’d had removed from his bowel was cancerous and that he was going to need more operations and chemotherapy in the new year It was a horribly tense time for everyone, but especially for my parents who did their best to try and give us all the kind of Christmas we had always had – lots of food and drink, lots of decorations and traditions and lots of presents.

Notting Hill, lunch time

I’m sure I wasn’t feeling as bright and shiny as this picture after the night before. I was obviously still working at Watchmaker, tying up the loose ends of the Millennium Show.

Lift, Park Lane Hotel Julie Hill and Caspar in the sleet of Willesden Green

Lift, Park Lane Hotel

A very exciting and decadent night out. Dave and I dressed up and took a cab into town. We started our night out at the piano cocktail bar at the top of the Hilton on Park Lane. I took this picture just after we’d had to go back and retrieve my camera from the bar where I’d forgotten left it. Then after champagne cocktails there we headed to Momo, a very trendy (at the time) Morroccan restaurant where we had yet more drinks in their members bar because our table wasn’t ready, and then staggered upstairs for a meal that we couldn’t really manage because we were so full of booze. It was a top night, Dave wore his suit, I wore my best dress, we must have blown a lot of money – hard to imagine doing any of that now.

Mistletoe, Portobello Road Dave buys some cheese at the farmers market

Mistletoe, Portobello Road

I’ve always been fascinated by mistletoe – ever since I was very young. It gives me a thrill to imagine being kissed by handsome men under it. In reality though, its more likely that you’d kissed by exactly the people you’d rather not be. So I never buy it, but I always look at it.

Shad Thames, Coldest Day of the Year A Willesden Winter Wonderland – Part II

Shad Thames, Coldest Day of the Year

I tried ot persuade Dave to walk all the way to Greenwich with me, but we never got much further than the shop and café at the Design Museum. The gloom of mid-winter and the bitter cold got the best of us. I think we took a taxi home soon after this photos was taken.

Oxford Circus tube station Dexter’s first cold

Oxford Circus tube station

I remember seeing this guy with an enormous teddy trying to navigate the barriers. You used to see some oddballs on the tube – maybe they’re still there, but I’m not.
